The Werkman Circle is a precision hoof-measuring tool designed to help farriers identify the central pivot point of the hoof and the external reference point for the center of rotation of the coffin joint. Developed in Switzerland by Christian Krieg, the Werkman Circle is derived from the concept of the Golden Mean Caliper but uses a unique 30:70 proportional relationship specifically intended for evaluating hoof proportions. The adjustable design allows the Circle to be accurately positioned for different hoof sizes by referencing the coronary band at the heel bulbs and the dorsal midline of the hoof. Once positioned, the center divider indicates the external reference for the coffin joint's center of rotation, giving the farrier an additional objective reference when evaluating hoof balance, trimming, and shoe placement.
